Poly-ADP-ribose polymerase-1 (PARP-1) is an enzyme that detects DNA damage and initiates DNA repair. The function of PARP-1 is important as the accumulated replication of damaged DNA would lead to progressive functional decline in many tissues in our body which contributes to the process of aging. For PARP-1 to exert its effect, it requires NAD+ as its sole substrate. Thus, replenishment of NAD+ via supplementation is important in the prevention of damaged DNA replication and the initiation of DNA repair to protect cellular integrity. In addition, blueberry extract is a potent antioxidant which protects cells and deters cell damage as well, complementing the actions of NAD+.
